Explain why such hybrid cars have a better city mpg than at highway speed?
Question by Some Guy: Explain why such hybrid cars have a better city mpg than at highway speed

Answer by Karl
Because when you are at highway speeds you are only using the gasoline motor.
In the city as you stop and go the electrical charges and discharges repeatedly. So you are actually just using the battery’s for most of the power not the gasoline.

i’m sure you know that these are just prototype cars. i mean these are usually one seater vehicle that sits lower to the ground than anything on the road. Theres is no way it can be legally driven on roads.
so far honda insight is the has the best fuel economy
60 mpg city and 66 mpg highway. This is due to its hybrid engine and its ability to run only on one cylinder when cruising on the highway.

Why cash for clunkers allow old SUV get rebate for only 2 MPG improvement? Why not 6-10 MPG like other cars?
Question by don1862: Why cash for clunkers allow old SUV get rebate for only 2 MPG improvement Why not 6-10 MPG like other cars
SUVs get some of the worst mileage, so why not require a bigger improvement rather than only 2MPG There are smaller and hybrid SUVs available that do get better mileage.

This rule was put in place to get older less efficient WORK TRUCKS traded in for newer, more efficient, lower emission trucks. Unfortunately, the automobile industry still has enough pull in D.C. that SUVs are still legalistically recognized as trucks…..

Is there a website that gives you MPG Rating of Cars from the 1950′S 1960′S and 1970′S?
Question by John: Is there a website that gives you MPG Rating of Cars from the 1950′S 1960′S and 1970′S
I can find MPG Ratings for all the cars made after 1981 but that is the earliest I wish i could find the MPG Data for the Muscle Cars from that time ( Stock ) that is anybody know of any site
Best answer:
Answer by D
No, because there were no published ratings for cars at that time. If you read old review in Popular Mechanics or Popular Science, they usually showed the mileage the car got as they tested it.

Whats with the smart car and other “high” MPG new cars?
Question by jaye580: Whats with the smart car and other “high” MPG new cars
I ask this because I just read the story on the Yahoo headlines about the Smart Fourtwo and how its so great that it gets 33/41 MPG and I have read about hybrid cars and their MPG too and I just have to ask this question…
In 1997 I bought a 1990 Geo Metro Convertible for under 00 at a dealership. The car was perfect and I never had one single problem with it. I drove it on two cross country trips as well as year round in New England and it averaged well over 40 MPG. Long distances on the highway- much better even. I just checked a news release from back in the day and this is what it said: “PERFORMANCE: * 0-60 m.p.h. (as tested, with 5-speed manual) 16.2 seconds. * Top speed, estimated 90 m.p.h. * Fuel economy, EPA city-highway, 40 and 46 m.p.g.” ( http://www.latimes.com/classified/automotive/highway1/la-hyw-geometro1990,0,2284994,full.story ) One summer when gas was .99 a gallon I drove the thing from Maine to Kentucky (1075 miles) on TWENTY DOLLARS. Thats 54 MPG !!!
So I guess I just don’t understand WHY someone could make a car like this almost 20 years ago, but nothing for sale right now beats it in fuel economy
And yeah- I regret ever selling it…

Answer by emiller1998
Lots of cars in the 90s could get mileage like your Metro. Every car company made one.
The reason nobody does anymore is pretty simple. People demand performance, safety, and decent comfort. Not one of those cars would come close to passing modern emissions or crash standards. 0-60 in 8 seconds is considered slow now. Your car didn’t come with many of the comforts people want. All that safety, comfort, and emissions stuff adds weight. So you need to add power just to go the same speed but people want to go faster so you need to add more power still. All that hurts your mileage.
