Question by don1862: Why cash for clunkers allow old SUV get rebate for only 2 MPG improvement Why not 6-10 MPG like other cars
SUVs get some of the worst mileage, so why not require a bigger improvement rather than only 2MPG There are smaller and hybrid SUVs available that do get better mileage.

This rule was put in place to get older less efficient WORK TRUCKS traded in for newer, more efficient, lower emission trucks. Unfortunately, the automobile industry still has enough pull in D.C. that SUVs are still legalistically recognized as trucks…..

Question by dt: I see cars in magazines like business week that are 80 mpg why arent they in the US
I have seen cars that get 80mpg but are only in other countries and for some reason not over here in the US. Does anyone have a legitimate reason for this What are some ulterior motives to keep those kind of cars from here I have read that the Ford Model T got 25mpg and now were no better what the heck

Best answer:

Answer by Liberate America from Fascism
Because Three reasons

1. Lobbyists of oil companies to gyrate and contort public policy to their interests.

2. Oil addiction- Americans for some reason love oil that most will do anything to prevent more efficient cars, which always kills the demand.

3. The infrastructure of American’s energy system is so ingrained into oil and coal that a dramatic change will devastate the economy initially, and it will take years to develop. don’t know even if a massive transformation is plausible and feasible.

I’d like to know how the difference between city and highway mpg on cars?

Question by : I’d like to know how the difference between city and highway mpg on cars
What is the main difference between city mpg and highway mpg and how are these values calculated

Best answer:

Answer by Joe
In the city you do a lot of standing around at lights, traffic jams and all with your engine running, thus burning fuel for no mileage. On the open road with less stopping and starting and at a constant speed you get mileage for every gallon you burn. My last car did 17 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on a long run. All this is variable by how you drive. As to the calculation I guess you could put exactly and only 1 gallon in the tank and drive in the city only to get your lowest figure and do the same on a run. In between is your average mpg for the car.
