on newer cars you can get a chip to increase HP, and MPG. Can I put a chip on my 88 mustang or is it too old?

I have an 88 mustang gt, and of course i want to get the most out of it. Everyone talks about getting a chip, so if i can get more HP, and better mpg, then i want one as well. So is it possible to get a chip for my car, and what can i expect from it.
