Do you really think engineers should be blamed for the lack of MPG in American cars?
Question by Hooligan: Do you really think engineers should be blamed for the lack of MPG in American cars
Engineers do not make the decisions — the direction of a company is controlled by those who control the cash flow. Yet article after article is being written, as Toyota outguns Detroit, about the failure of American engineering in improving the automobile.

American consumers are to blame for the lower fleet fuel economy of the American manufacturers. Americans like big powerful vehicles and thoes vehicles don’t get good milage. Compare a Sequoia and a Tundra to a Tahoe and a Silverado and you will see that American vehicles actually get the same or better milage as the Totyota.

Do you think everyone concerned with the environment should be pushing together for increased MPG in cars?
Question by Stan S: Do you think everyone concerned with the environment should be pushing together for increased MPG in cars
Do you think that by focusing all of our efforts we’ll have the best shot of achieving something lasting and permentent that will really make a difference and help make all the effort and struggle worth it Could this also help those emissions be lowered more aggressively After this is acomplished should we move onto one other area of the environment at a time to focus and stay focussed on it until effective action is taken in that area Does this sound like it could be a successful stratagy The next area I think we need to get progress on is caps in greenhouse gas emissions and then aggressively reducing them every year. I say cars first because there has recently been action in congress on this issue and with focused attention and efforts I think we can get higher increases in MPG then we otherwise would without it.

Absolutely,
There are two ways for a concerned group to impact the fuel efficiency factor. The first is regulatory pressure. Write your congressional representatives and state legislatures. The more environmentally friendly party now controls congress. Also, California has been able to set forth standards that exceed federal requirements.
The second is probably the quickest way by driving the market. Business fights regulations, but loves the dollar. Buy fuel efficient cars. Write to auto companies. Or, find shareholders of a corporation to submit a resolution for voting at a shareholder meeting. There are many socially conscious investment groups that will work together.
Once fuel economy has improved, so will the greenhouse gas emissions from automobiles. These and emissions from lawnmowers, etc.. are a major factor in smog and greenhouse gasses.
These are big problems without a magic bullet. What is needed is an array of coordinated strategies, sort of the shotgun approach. See Dick Cheney for more information about how not to target your shotgun.

Don’t You Think All Cars Should Have The Mpg Of The Car With The Highest Mpg?
Question by mazurjosh@sbcglobal.net: Don’t You Think All Cars Should Have The Mpg Of The Car With The Highest Mpg
Seriously, if we want to use less gas, we should use the most mpg that exists. Then we should have people try to upgrade and stuff.
And one thing, almost everyone in the US has a car. So it would make a huge difference. And like we should be able to take our cars to a place to upgrade them for like .

i don’t think I could could haul my family of 6 in a VW golf. Which kid do I trade in with the minivan
BTW, I do use a VW Diesel (rabbit, old school version) as my second car, but it’s not practical or possible to make a vehicle large enough to carry 8 passengers have the same fuel economy as a 2 seat commuter. And, like, oil should be a barrel, but it, like, isn’t.

What should come first: Raise the MPG of cars, start demanding more Hybrids, drill more oil, or invest in E85?
Question by Kappa Don: What should come first: Raise the MPG of cars, start demanding more Hybrids, drill more oil, or invest in E85
Feel free to choose build and buy more gas guzzling status machines if you want.

Drill more oil.
If you ask me, all these puddle jumping hybrid pop cans are more ‘status’ vehicles than any hard working pick-up.

A Politician should mandate better MPG cars?
Question by JR: A Politician should mandate better MPG cars
We put a man on the moon, but can not figure out how to make a car run on 100 MPG What about a government mandate on this
How about a contest, a billion dollars to the first American car company who has a car that can do this.
Everyone talks a good game, but this is the action needed.
The main contributors are diesel trucks who tear up our roads and use the most fossil fuels. Why doesn’t the government step in and do something about this…could it be about commerce instead of the envrionment

Nope. The government should get the hell out of the way of science and engineering development.
When there’s a large enough demand for it, the free market will find a way to do it that makes money. Until then, I say just deal with it. Unless you want to pay ,000 for your car. (Not me)
I think most of us just laugh at the Prius and Hybrid and whatever other environmentally friendly crap is dreamed up next.
